MARKARIAN’S
CHAIN
A sweeping arc of galaxies across the heart of the Virgo Cluster, where entire island universes crowd the same telescopic field.
Markarian’s Chain is a visually striking line of galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. Several of its members share a common motion through space, while others lie in the same rich cluster environment and happen to continue the apparent curve across the sky.
The field contains giant elliptical galaxies, lenticular systems, and distorted interacting galaxies. Rather than showing one isolated object, the Chain gives a sense of scale for a galaxy cluster: numerous enormous stellar systems packed into a relatively small angular region.
The apparent chain is especially interesting because several of its galaxies share related motion through the Virgo Cluster, while others simply fall along the same line of sight. Giant ellipticals such as M84 and M86 sit among smaller systems moving through a cluster filled with hot gas and strong gravitational interactions, giving a single wide field a cross-section of galaxy evolution in a dense environment.
The Chain lies in Virgo, the Maiden. Ancient cultures attached several female figures to this region, and Greek and Roman traditions variously associated Virgo with ideas of harvest, justice, and figures such as Astraea, Demeter, or Persephone.
Markarian’s Chain itself is entirely telescopic and takes its name from astronomer Benjamin Markarian, not mythology. It is a modern scientific pattern traced across a constellation whose human symbolism reaches back into antiquity.
Virgo accumulated several identities in ancient Mediterranean tradition. She was sometimes linked with Astraea, the last immortal to leave humanity at the end of a golden age, and sometimes with agricultural figures such as Demeter or Persephone. The nearby bright star Spica—whose name refers to an ear of grain—helped reinforce the constellation’s long association with harvest, fertility, and the changing seasons.
