NGC 6357 is a large star-forming complex where massive young stars pour ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds into the surrounding clouds. The energy hollows out cavities, lights the hydrogen, and leaves behind ridges and pillars of denser gas and dust.

Embedded clusters, including Pismis 24, contain exceptionally luminous stars whose radiation dominates the region. The result is a layered scene in which the raw material for future stars sits beside stars already powerful enough to reshape the cloud that formed them.

Embedded within NGC 6357 are extremely young clusters such as Pismis 24, whose massive stars pour ultraviolet radiation and fast winds into the surrounding cloud. Those stars excavate cavities, compress neighboring gas, and expose dense pillars at their edges, so the nebula records several generations of stellar birth acting back on the material from which they formed.

The Lobster Nebula lies in Scorpius, the celestial scorpion. In one well-known Greek tradition, the scorpion is the creature that kills—or is sent to humble—the hunter Orion.

Orion and Scorpius were placed on opposite sides of the sky, so one rises as the other sets. The nebula’s “Lobster” nickname is modern, but it sits inside a constellation whose curved claws and tail have been recognized as a scorpion across ancient sky traditions.

In the best-known Greek version, the scorpion is connected to Orion’s death after the hunter boasts that he can kill every animal on Earth. Gaia, or in some tellings Artemis, sends the scorpion against him. Their constellations were placed on opposite sides of the sky, so Scorpius rises as Orion disappears—a celestial separation that keeps their conflict repeating season after season.
