A dense sphere of ancient stars orbiting the Milky Way, resolving from a bright core into thousands of individual suns.
Messier 3 is one of the Milky Way’s great globular clusters: a gravitationally bound swarm of old stars orbiting far outside the Galaxy’s thin disk. Its crowded center glows almost continuously, while longer exposures resolve the outer regions into increasingly distinct stars.
Globular clusters preserve a very different stellar population from young open clusters. Their stars are generally ancient and metal-poor, making objects like M3 valuable laboratories for studying stellar evolution and the early history of the Milky Way.
M3 is especially valuable to astronomers because it contains a large population of variable stars, including many RR Lyrae stars whose predictable luminosities help measure distance. Its mixture of ordinary old stars, variable stars, and blue stragglers makes the cluster a compact laboratory for testing how stars evolve in a dense, ancient environment.
M3 sits in Canes Venatici, the Hunting Dogs. Unlike many classical constellations, Canes Venatici is a relatively modern figure, formalized in the seventeenth century and depicted as the pair of dogs held by Boötes.
The cluster itself was cataloged by Charles Messier in 1764. Its name therefore belongs to the age of telescopic astronomy rather than mythology, layered onto a constellation whose own identity was also shaped comparatively late in European sky mapping.
The Hunting Dogs are an early-modern addition to the sky rather than figures inherited directly from Greek antiquity. Hevelius depicted them on a leash held by Boötes, extending the older image of the herdsman or hunter into a fuller celestial scene. That layered history is a reminder that the constellation map itself continued evolving long after the classical myths were written down.
