The Elephant’s Trunk is a long, dense concentration of gas and dust inside the much larger IC 1396 emission region. Its bright rim faces intense ultraviolet radiation from nearby massive stars, while its interior remains dark and opaque at visible wavelengths.

That dense interior is more than a silhouette. It contains material capable of collapsing into new stars, so the same radiation that sculpts the trunk can also compress parts of the cloud and influence ongoing star formation along its edges.

The boundary of the trunk is a classic example of a bright-rimmed cloud: ionized gas streams away from the illuminated surface while denser material survives behind it. Infrared observations reveal embedded young stars and protostars inside the pillar, showing that this apparently dark structure is also a site of active stellar birth.

The nebula lies in Cepheus, the king in the Greek story of Andromeda. Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia were the parents of Andromeda, whose sacrifice to a sea monster set the stage for her rescue by Perseus.

The “Elephant’s Trunk” name is modern and purely visual, created after photography revealed the long dark pillar. It is a good example of how telescopes keep adding new imagery and nicknames inside constellations whose mythic identities are thousands of years older.

Within the larger Andromeda cycle, Cepheus is less an active hero than a royal figure caught in the consequences of Cassiopeia’s boast. The surrounding constellations preserve nearly the whole drama in the sky—Cassiopeia, Andromeda, Perseus, Cetus, and Cepheus—turning this region into one of the most complete mythological scenes among the constellations.
