FLAMING STAR
NEBULA
A runaway blue star lighting and ionizing the interstellar cloud it is currently racing through.
The Flaming Star Nebula surrounds AE Aurigae, a hot blue star moving rapidly through space. The star was probably ejected from a multiple-star interaction long ago and is now passing through an unrelated cloud of interstellar gas and dust.
Ultraviolet radiation from AE Aurigae ionizes hydrogen in the cloud while dust also reflects some of the star’s blue light. The combination creates a complex region of red emission, blue reflection, and dark lanes rather than a single uniformly glowing nebula.
AE Aurigae, the hot star lighting the nebula, is a runaway star moving rapidly through the surrounding interstellar cloud. Its ultraviolet radiation ionizes nearby gas while its visible light scatters from dust, allowing emission and reflection nebulosity to exist side by side. The star’s motion and the uneven cloud produce the turbulent mixture of bright ridges and dark lanes seen in deep exposures.
IC 405 lies in Auriga, the Charioteer. Ancient Greek sources attached several figures to this constellation, including the legendary Athenian king Erichthonius, while its brightest star Capella was associated with the goat Amalthea in later tradition.
The nebula’s modern name comes from the impression of flame-like streamers around AE Aurigae. The “flame” is an effect of glowing gas and reflected starlight rather than fire, but the image gives this faint telescopic object an immediately recognizable identity.
Auriga’s ancient identity was not completely fixed. Greek writers variously connected the Charioteer with Erichthonius, the legendary inventor or master of the four-horse chariot, while the bright star Capella was associated with the goat that nourished the infant Zeus. The constellation therefore combines heroic chariot imagery with older pastoral symbolism in the same patch of sky.
