About the Object

The Sun is a main-sequence star powered by nuclear fusion in its core, where hydrogen is converted into helium. Energy works its way outward until it escapes from the visible photosphere as the sunlight that warms Earth and illuminates the rest of the Solar System.

Its apparently calm disk is constantly changing. Convection creates fine surface texture, while magnetic fields produce sunspots, prominences, flares, and coronal mass ejections. Those magnetic events can extend their effects all the way to Earth through space weather.

Deep inside the Sun, hydrogen nuclei fuse into helium and release the energy that ultimately becomes sunlight. Above the core, energy crosses the radiative and convective zones before escaping from the photosphere, while the Sun’s magnetic field drives the roughly eleven-year cycle of sunspots, flares, prominences, and changes in the solar wind.

Folklore & Mythology

In Hawaiian, can refer to the Sun and to the day itself, reflecting the Sun’s fundamental role in marking time and direction. Its daily path across the sky has always been one of the most immediate celestial cycles available to navigators and observers.

In Greek tradition the Sun was personified by Helios, who crossed the heavens each day. Cultures around the world built solar stories around the same unmistakable object, long before astronomy revealed that the Sun is an ordinary star viewed from an extraordinary distance: close enough to sustain a world.

One of the best-known Hawaiian moʻolelo involving the Sun tells how Māui sought to slow its rapid passage across the sky so people would have more daylight for work and food preparation. In versions associated with Haleakalā, he confronts or snares the Sun and bargains for longer days, linking the daily motion of the Sun to landscape, season, and human need.
