We begin by finding our bearings among the constellations, then move between a direct view through the telescope and live deep-sky imaging on a screen. You’ll see how we find, track, and photograph objects, with time to look again and ask questions as the night unfolds.

No prior knowledge is needed. We introduce the sky and explain what you’re seeing along the way. Come with curiosity—whether this is your first look through a telescope or you already spend your evenings looking up.

Hawaiʻi After Dark is a three-hour experience limited to ten guests. Workshops and special events can have different schedules, so check your chosen event page for the exact start time, duration, and group details.

The lineup depends on the season, the Moon, the weather, and what is well placed in the sky that night. Depending on your event, we may explore planets, star clusters, nebulae, or galaxies. Each event page describes its focus and likely targets; the final observing plan follows the conditions.

Hawaiʻi After Dark brings together sky orientation, visual observing, and live imaging. Shooting the Stars: Astrophotography 101 is a field workshop focused on making a deep-sky image—from alignment, focus, and framing through guiding, capture, stacking, and processing. Guests drive themselves to the observing site. We choose one of four mountain meeting locations based on the evening’s weather and viewing conditions. Your confirmation email includes the final location, arrival time, directions, and any last-minute updates. Follow those details for your booked night.

Bring warm layers, closed-toe shoes, and water for an outdoor mountain evening. Check your confirmation email for any additional preparation specific to your event. Hot chocolate is included with Hawaiʻi After Dark.

We provide the telescopes and imaging systems used during our observing nights. You can follow the experience without bringing equipment. For an astrophotography workshop, check the event details or contact us before deciding what personal camera gear to bring.

This is an outdoor mountain experience, so the meeting point and observing plan may shift with the weather. Check your confirmation email and any updates before heading out. If you’re unsure about the plan for your booking, contact us before traveling to the meeting site.

Both are part of our observing experience. The 12-inch Meade LX90 sends starlight directly to the eyepiece, while our guided imaging systems collect exposures you can watch develop on a screen. We compare those views so you can connect the real object overhead with the detail revealed by the camera.

Yes—Hawaiʻi After Dark includes downloadable digital copies of the photographs captured during your tour. We also bring the night’s visual and camera views together before closing, so the images come with a better understanding of what you saw and how we captured it.
