Lunar Observations: Exploring the Craters of the Moon

Most stargazing tours avoid the Full Moon.
We celebrate it.
Join Deep Sky Hawaii for a guided night under one of the brightest natural lights in the solar system—the Moon—observed through professional telescopes from the slopes of Maunakea.
On Full Moon nights, the landscape glows silver, shadows stretch across the lava fields, and the Moon reveals its vast maria (ancient lava plains), brilliant highlands, and the same surface features explored by the Apollo astronauts. Through our telescopes, you’ll see the Moon in stunning detail while learning how it formed, why it always shows us the same face, and how it shapes Earth’s tides and history.
This experience blends Hawaiian night-sky appreciation, modern astronomy, and an unforgettable close-up view of our nearest celestial neighbor.
What you’ll experience
🔭 High-power telescope views of the Moon’s surface
🌋 A moonlit Maunakea landscape unlike anything else on Earth
🌊 Stories of how the Moon influences tides, navigation, and life in Hawaiʻi
✨ Laser-guided constellation tour of the surrounding sky
📷 Optional photos of the Moon through the telescope (when conditions allow)
Why a Full Moon tour?
While darker skies reveal faint galaxies and nebulae, Full Moon nights create a completely different—and equally powerful—astronomical experience:
the entire landscape becomes visible without flashlights
the Moon dominates the sky like a second sun
shadows become dramatic and surreal
it’s the best time to understand our closest neighbor in space
Perfect for families, photographers, and anyone who wants a relaxed introduction to astronomy without needing ultra-dark skies.
Location
Tours take place on the slopes of Maunakea, above the clouds and far from city lights, where the Moon rises over one of the most sacred and astronomically important mountains on Earth.
If you want, I can write a shorter Airbnb-style version, a luxury/private-tour version, or a science-heavier version (great for your audience coming through the Visitor Information Station).
